What Is Restorative Dentistry?

Restorative dentistry refers to procedures that restore the health of your teeth. When teeth are decayed or damaged in some way, restorative procedures repair the damage so that the teeth can stay in place in your mouth. In some situations, restorative dentistry replaces teeth that are missing or can’t be repaired to restore overall dental function.

Benefits of Restorative Dentistry

Restorative dentistry has significant dental health benefits:

  • Preserve your natural teeth. Restorative dental procedures repair damage to your teeth. In many cases restorative dentistry can save your natural teeth, helping them last for years to come, ideally for the rest of your life.
  • Prevent the need for further treatment. The right restorative treatment applied at the right time can prevent the need for additional or more complex treatment later on.
  • Save time and money. Restorative dentistry can often save you time and money by repairing teeth before they are too damaged to be saved. Replacing teeth with prosthetics is a more expensive and more time consuming process than most restorative procedures.
  • Improve your smile. In many cases restorative dentistry can improve the appearance of your teeth for a more natural and attractive smile.

Frequently Asked Questions About Restorative Dentistry

Are composite fillings better than metal fillings?
Composite fillings are used almost exclusively in dentistry because they don’t expand and contract with changes in temperature the way metal fillings do. The frequent expansion and contraction of metal fillings may eventually cause the tooth to break. Composite fillings also look more natural than metal fillings.

You don’t necessarily need to have all of your metal fillings replaced. If there is a problem with a filling, such as if it falls out, that would be the right time to replace it. We would be glad to replace any of your metal fillings with composite if you have concerns.
What does root canal treatment entail?
Root canal treatment is a procedure involving the dental pulp, the soft tissue that exists in the root canal of the tooth. If this tissue becomes infected or is at risk of an infection due to a deep cavity, a root canal is needed. The dental pulp will be removed, the root canal will be thoroughly cleaned out, and the tooth will be filled with a rubbery replacement material that is resistant to infection. In many cases a crown will be placed over the tooth for protection after root canal treatment.
How long do crowns last?
A crown placed over a tooth will last an average of 10-15 years. However, with good care and maintenance, a crown can last a lifetime. Porcelain crowns are susceptible to wear and tear over time, but offer a natural look. Metal crowns may last longer, but do not provide the natural look of porcelain.
Does a cracked tooth need a filling or a crown?
In most cases a cracked tooth would be best treated with a crown. A filling may be able to patch or repair a crack, but there is a greater risk of the crack spreading. A cracked tooth may also need a root canal to best treat and protect the tooth.
